Note: Before the advent of Y-DNA testing, it was believed by many that Joseph Phillips who married Elizabeth Malavery was a son of Michael and Barbara Phillips of Rhode Island. This was because John Austin Osborne's Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island suggested that this might be the case. However, several descendants of the known sons of Michael and Barbara Phillips have gotten their Y-DNA tested and they belong to Phillips Family DNA Group 11. The below descendants of Joseph Phillips and Elizabeth Malavery Phillips do not match the Y-DNA of Group 11. This indicates that Joseph was not a son of Michael and Barbara Phillips of Rhode Island.
