Longtime Juneau resident Russell C. Phillips died April 30, 2008, in Juneau, after a brief illness. He was 92.
He was born May 28, 1915, in Lucca, N.D., to William and Blanche Phillips. He graduated from Exeter High School in 1933 and served in the Marines and as an accountant on President Hoover's ranch.
He met his wife, Alleyne "Pat" Phillips in Bakersfield, Calif., and they married on June 16, 1940. They moved to Juneau in 1961.
He was the chief accountant for the state of Alaska and retired in 1982, after 19 years of service. He served as associate pastor at the First Church of God and was instrumental in its construction.
Family members said he was a loving and gentle man who enjoyed helping others and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his son, Ronald Phillips and wife, Marie, of Juneau; grandchildren, Melissa Reynolds and husband, Byron, of Texas, and Jared Phillips and wife, Suzann, of Juneau; great-grandchildren, Shealy, Payton and Raylin Reynolds, of Texas; nephew, David Phillips and wife, Debbie, of Juneau; great-nieces, Jamie Garcia and husband, Ricardo, of Ariz., and Jennifer Katzeek and husband, Aaron, of Juneau; brother, Edgar Phillips and family, of Colorado; and other relatives.
A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at First Church of God, near the Juneau International Airport. An additional service will be held in Bakersfield at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Church of God Memorial Fund, 2215 Ka-See-An Drive, Juneau, AK 99801-8012.
