(1) A sad affair occurred on the 22d, inst.,in Opelika, Ala. John Hooper shot and killed Thomas H. Phillips, for the alleged reason that Phillips had circulated reports about Hooper and a young lady, very detrimental to the latter’s character. Hooper gave himself up to the Sheriff. The evidence so far appears against him. He is about twenty years old; Phillips was about fifty-five and left a family.

The jury in the case of J.D.B. Hooper, charged with the murder of T.H. Phillips, in Opelika, Alabama last May, returned a verdict, at Seale, Alabama, Saturday morning, of not guilty. The venue was changed from Lee to Russell county last fall. Col. Thrasher, of Atlanta, was one of the lawyers for the prosecution.
