Charles Samuel Phillips, one of the county’s most prominent farmers, died at his home in Plainfield Wednesday morning, April 10, at 4:30, following a stroke of paralysis. He had been in ill health the past six years. He was 70 years old and a member of Plainfield Baptist Church.
Mr. Phillips was the son of the late Axom and Serena Nicholson Phillips, early settlers of Dodge County, who were among the county’s most prominent citizens during their entire lifetime.
Services were conducted at the Plainfield Baptist Church Friday afternoon at 4:30 by Rev. J.B. Evans. Hymns were sung by Carolyn and Frances Giddens, accompanied by Mrs. W. A. Giddens.
Pallbearers were Felton Dykes, John Lewis, Milton Lee, Jesse Hair, Alfred Wright and Math Peacock. Interment was in the Phillips Cemetery.
In addition to his wife, the former Eldora Evans, Mr. Phillips is survived by two brothers, W.W. Phillips, Eastman, and Early Phillips, Eastman, Route Five; three sisters, Mrs. R.F. Jones, Eastman, Mrs. W.R. Taylor, Clearwater, Florida, and Mrs. J.E. Floyd Eastman; five sons, C.S. Phillips, Florida City, Florida, Pratt Phillips, Cochran, Max Phillips, Keesler Field, Mississippi, and Merle and Claude Phillips, Plainfield; four daughters, Miss Pearl Phillips, Powder Springs, Mrs. Mattie Lou Godfrey, Cochran, and Misses Janelle and Betty Jo Phillips, Plainfield.
