Death of Capt. Phillips
Capt. Ansyl Phillips, superintendent and general agent of the Keokuk Northern Line Packet Company, died at St. Louis Thursday morning. On Monday last he was riding into that city from the suburbs in an open buggy with a gentleman, when the latter, who was driving, was accidentally thrown out as they turned a corner. The horse at once became frightened and ran furiously, Capt. Phillips being thrown against a brick building and fatally injured. He lingered until the time stated, and then expired, without having regained consciousness. Capt. Phillips was 59 years of age, he having been born in Cincinnati in 1817. When about 18 he shipped on a steamer as a pastry cook, having learn the trade of a baker with Mr. Sam Cloon. He was afterwards steward, and went to St. Louis in 1847, when he became connected with the Keokuk Packet Company. He was also connected with the Keokuk Northern Line Packet Company from the time it took the place of the Northern Line and Keokuk Packet Company.
