SISTER FRANCIS JOSEPH PHILLIPS, C.V.I., died on Wednesday, August 27, 2008.
She was born in Plantersville, Texas, on January 17, 1915. Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, Houston, Texas, September 8, 1931. She made final Professional of Vows on May 15, 1937. During her many years of ministry, Sr. Francis Joseph taught in the elementary and high schools in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and Dioceses of Beaumont and Austin. She served as principal at Annunciation School 6 years and local Superior for several years at St. James Convent, Port Arthur, Texas, and Incarnate Word Academy Convent, Houston. Sister was a self-taught seamstress and an excellent cook (especially vegetables). She was motherly to the Sisters who lived with her at the Academy Convent. She was proud to be a native Texan and her entire Community service for almost 75 years has been within the boundaries of the State of Texas.
Sister Francis Joseph was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her sister, Frances Wakefield, Houston, TX, brothers, Bernard J. Phillips, Houston, TX, and Anthony T. Phillips, Plantersville, TX, multiple nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Visitation begins at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 29, 2008 at Incarnate Word Convent Chapel, 3400 Bradford Place, Houston, Texas. The Wake Service will be at 6:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. at the convent Chapel on Saturday August 30, 2008, with Fr. Patrick Cummings, Celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
