MARGARET IRENE ANDERSON PHILLIPS
Margaret Irene Anderson Phillips, age 85, passed away at a local care center on March 31, 2002.
She was born on March 16, 1916 on the family farm near Conway to Bert I. and Hannah M. Berggren Anderson. She graduated from Conway Grade School in 1930 and Mount Vernon High School in 1934 and then studied piano privately in Bellingham. Her family was very musical. Her four older brothers formed a singing quartet in the late twenties and Margaret was their accompanist.
She taught piano until her marriage to Knox S. Phillips in Mount Vernon on September 24, 1939. They were married in the First Methodist Episcopal Church where they were both members. On September 24, 1999 they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
She was an organist for the Methodist Church for years then played at a number of other churches in the valley.
Margaret was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, she was an election board worker in the Skagit County, member of Skagit Pioneer Association, the Skagit Historical Society, Mount Vernon Ladies Music Club and a ten year Hospice volunteer. She enjoyed traveling, outdoor sports and singing in the Skagit Valley College Oratorio Chorus.
She is survived by her children, Richard K. Phillips and his wife, Marcia; daughter, Carol M. Moyer and her husband, Pete; grandchildren, Eric Phillips, Carl Phillips; great-grandchildren: Austin Phillips, Taylor Phillips, Annika Margaret Phillips; step-grandchildren: Leslie Schubarth, Jack, Bill, Peter and David Moyer; twelve step-great-grandchildren, two nieces: Mary Bennett and Mari Densmore; and three nephews: Bob, John, and Brian Anderson. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Robin, Lloyd and Earl Anderson.
Memorial services will be held in the First United Methodist Church Saturday, April 6, 2002 at 1:00 PM.
Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1607 E. Division St., Mount Vernon, WA 98273, Skagit Historical Society, P.O. Box 818, La Conner, WA 98257 or a favorite charity.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of the Kern Funeral Home of Mount Vernon.
