Mary Carolina McIntosh Phillips

"Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised."-Proverbs 31:30

Carolyn began her earthly journey on October 30, 1909, in Forney, Texas. She journeyed to Heaven on Wednesday, October 25, 1995.

Her parents, William and Verlinda Crutcher McIntosh, and her brothers, Sam and Bill, preceded her as did her beloved and devoted husband, John Gayle (Jack) Phillips, Jr.

Those celebrating her memory are her daughters, Linda Carol Holt and her husband, Don, of West Columbia and Thelma Lew Thompson and her husband, Keith, of Brazoria; her son, John Gayle Phillips, III and his wife, Larkad, of West Columbia. She was a dearly loved "Mudder" to her grandchildren, Ben Holt, Paul Holt, Verlinda Thompson, John Gayle Phillips, IV, Joy Phillips Dildine and Jack Adriance Phillips, and to her eight great-grandchildren, Nikki, Natalie, Ashley, Stacy, Stephanie, Laura, Taylor, Jaye and John.

She was lovingly cared for during her illness by Caroline Davis, Mildred Blair and Dorrie Cash.

Carolyn met her husband, Jack, as a student in Library Science at the University of Texas at Austin, where she excelled in swimming and dance. She gave up city life for life of a rancher's wife on December 22, 1929. She learned to ride and enjoyed being a "ranch hand" until her first child, Linda, was born, but she always enjoyed their friends in the ranching industry and participated with Jack in numerous related organizations as well as the Brazoria County Fair Association.

Carolyn was a devoted Christian who practiced her faith in all she did every day. Her family and home were the center of her life. Her family thrived in the warmth of the home and family life she created for all of them and visitors were always graciously received. Her commitment to her community was a founding of the First Capitol Study Club, and she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

A service celebrating her life will be held at Columbia United Methodist Church in West Columbia on Friday, October 27, 1995, at 3 o'clock p.m. with the Reverend Glen Ferguson conducting the service.

Pallbearers are grandsons, Ben Holt, Paul Holt, John Gayle Phillips, IV, and Jack Adriance Phillips, along with her sons-in-law, Don Holt and Keith Thompson.

Honorary pallbearers are her dear friends, the members of the First Capitol Study Club, Jason Dildine, Dr. Roy Ledbetter, Tom Tigner, Howard Pickle, Ray Gayle, Ray Moore, Joe Moore, Leonard Stiles, J.W. Isaacs, Harold Beal, Edgar McGaughey, Mickey Johnston, and the members of the Central E.M.S.

Burial will follow at the Phillips-Price Cemetery at Battle Island Ranch. Visitors may call at the ranch on Thursday, October 26, 1995, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The family requests that gifts to honor Carolyn be made to the Central E.M.S. Ambulance Fund, 400 N. 13th Street, West Columbia, Texas 77486.

Arrangements by Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia.
