Mrs. Caroline Stephens Dies At Home of Mrs. Woodruff On Saturday
Mrs. Caroline Elizabeth Stephens, 89, passed away Saturday morning at 9:25 o'clock at her home with her daughter Mrs. H. O. Woodruff and family on Main Street [Lumpkin].
Mrs. Stephens had suffered the natural incline of age, for several years but her illness lasted little more than two days.
Mrs. Stephens was born in Burke County, near Augusta August 3, 1845, one of the children of the late Mr. & Mrs.* Henry Turner Brinson. The family moved to a home near Richland when little Caroline was only a small child.
After her marriage to the late Henry M. Stephens she made her home with him in Richland, there reared their fine family of children and on the day following her 89th birthday passed away here at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. O. Woodruff. She has made her home here since the passing of her husband ten years ago and had been accorded every possible comfort and loving attention within the power of her dear ones.
Among her many attributes for laudation and emulation, her power and accomplishments as a wife and Mother came first. She was loyalty itself to these responsibilities, a jewel and a blessed inspiration in the home. She was one of the rare Mothers who could and did rear a family successfully. Hers was a great soul, a sweet nature, considerate of others at all times.
Her connection to the Baptist Church was made at Sardis, an historic old institution of this section, when she was a young girl. She was baptized by Rev. M. B. Binion.
Her serene and tranquil disposition was also methodical and orderly. A neighbor remarked just after her death that "her passing with the anniversary of her birthday seemed only a part of her orderly routine". She was taken acutely ill on Thursday of last week, lingered through Friday which was her 89th birthday and passed away Saturday morning as above stated.
Many and beautiful were the floral tributes brought and sent by friends far and near.
Rev. L. N. Hartsfield, pastor of Lumpkin Church conducted the beautiful and remarkably befitting funeral service from the home, Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Family descendants and friends from many points formed a large concourse gathered for her funeral.
The funeral choir was composed by Mrs. L. N. Hartsfield, Mrs. W. T. Halliday, Mrs. F. C. Hobbs, Mrs. Fred Singer, and Mrs D. G. Bland, who sang "Rock of Ages" and "How Firm a Foundation." Miss Harriett Parker had charge at the piano. Fort Brothers had charge of funeral arrangements.
Pallbearers were Messrs, F. C. Hobbs, D. G. Bland, L. A. Brown, J. D. Singer, E. E. Humber, and J. T. Banks.
Surviving children are, Mrs. H. O. Woodruff, Lumpkin; Mrs. C. C. Bush and Mrs. Ida Anderson, Fort Valley; Mrs. C. E. Woodruff, Chipley; Mr. W. S. Stephens, Avera. Grandchildren, Mr. Horace Woodruff, Peas, Tx.; Miss Margurite Woodruff, Lumpkin, Ga; Maurice Bush, Jacksonville, Fl; Clinton Bush, Jr., Fort Valley; Mrs. Odom of Savannah; Mrs. Paul Payne, Columbus; Mr. Dewey Stephens, Kite, Ga.; and a number of great grandchildren.
Interment was made Sunday afternoon at the family burial plot near Brooklyn.
