John Phillips, Jr.
John H. Phillips, Jr., 62, 840 Alabama St., died at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph's Hospital, Paris. He was a retired painter and carpenter and a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II.
He was born at Peerless on Feb. 3, 1920, son of John Henry and Nancy Hettich Phillips. He was married to Velma Johnston Clark in Oklahoma on Dec. 26, 1977. She survives.
Other survivors include a step-son, E. J. Clark of Sulphur Springs, two step-daughters, Imogene Friddle of Reilly Springs and Carolyn Steed of Emory; a brother, Deryl Phillips of Mt. Vernon; two sisters, Delma and Dorothy Phillips, both of Sulphur Springs; two step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Estes Phillips, in 1978.
Funeral services were held Thursday in Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Dages, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Burial followed in Gafford Chapel Cemetery with cousins serving as pallbearers.
