ATLANTA, Ga.,-The remains of Benjamin Z. Phillips, prominent Atlanta lawyer who died Saturday afternoon in New York city, arrived here Monday for funeral and interment.
The funeral will be held Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock at his residence, 894 Ponce de Leon avenue, with Dr. David Marx officiating, and interment will be private in Oakland cemetery.
Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, who was Miss Nettie Elsas; two children, Mrs. Frederick B. Barnet, of Boston, and J. Elsas Phillips, a student at the University of Pennsylvania; his mother, Mrs. Sarah Phillips; one brother, Mr. Manning Phillips, of New York; and one sister, Mrs. William Exton.
Mr. Phillips suffered a nervous breakdown about a year ago, and was in New York under treatment of a specialist when he died, at the age of fifty years.
He was born in New York and came to this city as a boy with his parents. After attending the public schools here he went to the University of Georgia and graduated there with honors at the age of nineteen years, specializing in law.
On leaving the university he read law in the office of Calhoun, King & Spalding, and later became a member of the law firm of Glenn, Sinton & Phillips, which a few years ago became the law firm of Rosser, Slaton, Phillips & Hopkins.
All branches of Fulton superior court will be adjourned Tuesday in respect to the memory of Mr. Phillips, who practiced at the Atlanta bar for 31 years and who was recognized as one of the ablest lawyers of the city and state.
