BAKER OF EARLY DAYS IS CALLED TO REST
Alexander Phillips, an old Merchant of this City, Expires in Seattle.
Alexander Phillips, a pioneer of this city, died in Seattle last Thursday evening from a complication of ailments. The deceased was a native of Australia and came here in 1849. He claimed the distinction of opening the first bakery in San Francisco and selling the first loaf of bread purchased here. He also supplied the first soda water drunk in this city, going to Sacramento in a sloop to bring the carbonated water to the Golden Gate.
Mr. Phillips’ subsequent career was devoted to the theatrical business. In the palmy days of theatrical affairs at the old California Theater he received $12 a day posting bills and trimming lamps. Afterward he was a musician in the orchestra and served under Wallace for Mrs. Stark and the great Charles Keene. In 1858 he went with a party of pioneers to the Fraser River luring the gold excitement there.
He was a member of California Lodge No. 1, I.O.O.F., and had received all the honors that the Free and Accepted Masons could bestow. The departed leaves a wife, Mrs. Rebecca Phillips, and eleven children, among whom are Mrs. J. Isaacs and Mrs. Casper of Monterrey. The deceased was 87 years of age.
