Bobby Lee Phillips, Sr., was born May 16, 1920 in Dallas, the only child of Robert E. and Norma Lee (Copeland) Phillips.
Bobby was a lifelong resident of Tanglewood. He was a retired Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army, served as Postmaster at Tanglewood Post Office, was owner and operator of Tanglewood General Store, a rural mail carrier in Lee County, and then went to work at Hodge’s Man’s Store in Rockdale.
On January 15, 1955, he and Joyce Simmons were married in Bryan.
Bobby was a member and chairman of the Deacons at Tanglewood Baptist Church and a member of Lexington American Legion Post #6.
Bobby passed away Friday, January 6, 2012 in the Richards Memorial Hospital in Rockdale, reaching the age of 91. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert L. “Bobby” Phillips, Jr. on November 20, 1992, and his parents.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce Phillips of Tanglewood; 2 daughters, Belinda Harris of Houston and Paula Barry of Houston; grandson, Barry Byrom of Kyle; 2 great grandsons, Hunter and Houston Byrom.
Services for Bobby will be 11:00 AM Thursday, January 12, 2012 in the Tanglewood Baptist Church. Burial with military honors will follow in the Prospect Cemetery near Lexington, with Pastor David Atwood officiating.
Visitation will be 5PM to 7PM on Wednesday, January 11, at the funeral home in Rockdale.
Pallbearers will be Barry Byrom, Verlie Simmons, Joe Spittler, Chris Spittler, Roy Simpson, and Bill Spivey.
Honorary pallbearers will be Hunter Byrom, Houston Byrom and Troy Simpson.
Memorials may be made in Bobby’s name to Tanglewood Baptist Church, 11203 Hwy 77 North, Lexington, Texas 78947.
