Virginia McFarland, mom of late star of "Our Gang" comedies, dies at age 88

Virginia Phillips McFarland, mother of the late "Our Gang" actor, George "Spanky" McFarland, died Friday morning of pneumonia at Charlton Methodist Hospital in Dallas. She was 88.

Mrs. McFarland never recovered from the shock of her son's death June 30, said her daughter-in-law Theresa McFarland. She said Mrs. McFarland was admitted to Charlton's intensive care unit July 11 with pneumonia.

Virginia McFarland was born March 15, 1905, in Texarkana, Ark., and moved to Oak Cliff as a child. She graduated from Oak Cliff High School in 1922 and worked in her family's felt business until she married Robert McFarland in 1927. He died in 1958.

From 1931 to 1944, the family lived in California, where, as a child, Spanky McFarland starred in the "Our Gang" comedies. In 1966, Mrs. McFarland moved to Duncanville, where the family met monthly. Spanky McFarland was living in Keller at the time of his death.

Mrs. McFarland is survived by a son, Roderick E. McFarland of Lone Oak; a daughter, Amanda M. Hall of Cedar Hill; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Cedar Hill. Burial will follow at Myrtle Cemetery in Ennis.

Virginia Phillips McFarland, died on July 30, 1993 at the age of 88 after a brief illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Emmett McFarland; a son, Thomas Emmett, and Spanky one month ago on June 30, 1993.

Born in Texarkana, Arkansas March 15, 1905 and lived in Oak Cliff during her childhood. Graduated Oak Cliff High School 1922. Moved to California in 1931 when Spanky joined the "Our Gang" Comedies. The family returned to Dallas in 1944. Mrs. McFarland moved to Duncanville in 1966 where she lived until her death.

Survived by daughter and son-in-law, Amanda McFarland and Arch Hall of Cedar Hill; son and daughter-in-law, Roderick Eugene and Theresa McFarland of Lone Oak; daughter-in-law, Doris McFarland of Keller; four grandsons, Verne McFarland of Watauga, Greg McFarland of Camp Wood, Rick McFarland of Balch Springs, and Keith McFarland Hall of Cedar Hill; three granddaughters, Betsy McFarland of Ft. Worth, Stephanie McFarland of Dallas, Amy McFarland of Lone Oak; one great grandson, Alec Weir of Dallas, and five great granddaughters, Lanae McFarland of Watauga, Amy and Katy McFarland of Greenville, Pepper and Brooke Hall of Cedar Hill.

Memorial services will be held at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Cedar Hill, Tuesday, August 3, 1993, 11 A.M., the Rev. Gerald Sevick, St. Anne Episcopal Church, DeSoto, officiating, assisted by Dr. Mike Daves of Walnut Hill United Methodist Church, Dallas.

The family will receive family and friends at Hughes Funeral Chapel in Cedar Hill, Monday, August 2, from 5-8 P.M.
