It is thought we are descended from Joel Phillips, through perhaps his son Joel Jr., because the story is our grandfathr, Henry Phillips, was an orphan. Henry Phillips married Louwvenia Atkinson in Morgan County in the 1800s, daughter of Thomas Atkinson. He and Louvenia finally moved from Morgan County to then Campbell County, now Douglas County, Georgia. He and Louvenia had 12 children, ll sons, and one daughter. Among their sons was Zachariah and Whitmill, both names common to the Joel Phillips Family. I am descended from his son Robert Crowley Phillips, who was a confederate soldier. He married first Lucy Neil or Neill, from Coweta County, and then a Mrs. L.A.Danforth, widow of a confederate soldier. Among his children by his first marriage was my Great Grandfather, William David Phillips, who married Ellen Virginia Wright in Campbell/Douglas County, daughter of Isaac C. Wright, a son of William C. Wright, also living in Campbell County.

William David Philllips and his family moved to the Tyler Texas area in 1892, and in 2002 they returned to Carroll County, Ga. to the Burnett place on Jones Mill Rd. near Whitesburg. It remained in the family until sold around 2005. William David Phillips had several children, my own grandfather being Robert Clifford Phillips, who married neighboring Lovella Josephine Young.

If you know more about the ancestry of Henry Phillips, pleas contact me at: Randoolph Phillips, P.O. Box 303, Shiloh, Ga. 31826. I have forgone more names and dates, because my genealogical histories are a part of my library which is temporarily packed away. I just found this site and am anxious to get on board.

Hi, Randolph,

We have a member of the project who also descends from Henry Phillips and Lavinia Atkinson and his Y-DNA indicates that he belongs to Group 8. Here is his pedigree:

Kit number 126900

1. Probably William Phillips bc 1660 possibly in VA, m Susannah Williams
2. Probably William Phillips bc 1700 probably in Richmond Co VA, m Ann unknown (possibly Yates)
3. Joel Phillips bc 1735 probably in Orange Co, VA, m Elizabeth Harrington (?)
4. Whitmell Phillips bc 1775 Wilkes Co GA, m Nancy Hurley
5. Thomas Henry Phillips b 11 March 1801 Morgan Co GA, m Lavinia Atkinson
6. Elijah Madison Phillips b 13 May 1839 GA, m Josephine Bomar
7. Joseph Benjamin Phillips b April 1871 Douglas Co GA, m Martha Lois

As you can see, this participant believes that Henry's father was Whitmell Phillips and his grandfather was Joel Phillips. Since you are a male Phillips, you could join the project and get tested to see if your Y-DNA matches this participant. Group 8 has very Anglo-Saxon looking Y-DNA - in fact, their Y-DNA matches that found in some 3000 year old skeletons discovered in a cave in Saxony, Germany. Hope you decide to join!

Sincerely,
Nancy Kiser
