For Passing Counterfeit Money.
Frank Powell and Wiley Phillips, colored, of Mitchell county, were before United States Commissioner Smith yesterday charged with passing counterfeit money. A large number of witnesses from Pelham were here to testify. The spurious coin that they are alleged to have passed was several half dollar pieces made of a white metal much lighter than silver and very poorly stamped. The imitation is a very bad one, and the wonder is that anyone could be fooled with it. Frank Powell was bound over to the next term of the United States court and Wiley Phillips was discharged.
