There is a fascinating article entitled "The Peopling of Europe" written by a British woman named Jean Manco at this link.  Jean's studies are often published in scholarly format, but she also writes popular material for magazines.  I would describe this article as a cross between scholarly and popular, and it is about the burgeoning field of population genetics, which combines DNA analysis, anthropology, archeology, palaeontology and linguistics.
